Study of kidney stones

Reporting on kidney stones, which include morpho-compositional studies, on possible causes that have led to the formation of calculus and generic clinical and therapeutic orientation.

Urinary lithiasis (urolithiasis or kidney stones) is a pathology that is characterized by the formation of urinary calculus inside the kidneys or urinary tracts result of the crystallization of substances present in the normal urine, such as calcium, phosphate, oxalate or purines. In addition to causing very painful episodes, the possible repetitions of new calculus (in 50-60 % of cases) may lead to serious states. The prevalence of renal lithiasis has increased markedly in recent years, and is greater than 14 percent of prevalence in the Balearic Islands. This fact and its high recurrence make renal lithiasis a first-class health problem, both due to the consumption of health resources and the personal and social-occupational repercussions it causes.

The Laboratory of Renal Lithiasis research of the UIB has a multidisciplinary research group specialized in the study of kidney stones whose purpose is to provide the family doctor or the specialist with new data that will help to establish the diagnosis and the therapeutic guidelines of the lithiasis patient. The report that is elaborated from the study of the urinary stone includes:

  • The composition and structure of the stone
  • The possible causes that have induced their formation
  • A generic clinical and therapeutic orientation.

OUR EXPERIENCE

foto pH

The urine pH is the key to diagnosing and treating renal lithiasis in more than 80 percent of the cases, for this reason it is necessary patients affected by this pathology regularly monitor urinary pH. The Laboratory of Renal Lithiasis Research of the University of the Balearic Islands and the Group of Chemical Transducers of the CSIC have developed a device that has an advanced technology of microsensors that allows to the renal lithiasal patients to monitor the urinary pH fast, easily and effectively. Based on two patents of the UIB and the CSIC, the company Devicare has manufactured the medical device Lit-Control pH Meter. The Laboratory of Renal Lithiasis Research and Devicare have also developed and patented two new products (diet supplements) to adjust the urinary pH, when it is outside the recommended values, combined with crystallization inhibitors.
