Economic analysis of the impacts generated by tourism

Studies aimed to know, from an economic perspective, the effects derived from the tourist activity.

Tourism is one of the main engines of the Balearic Islands economy. It has become one of the most outstanding economic phenomena of our time thanks to its rapid and continuous growth. This has caused a whole set of transformations in several areas (economic, environmental, social, etc.).

A research group from the University studies the impacts derived from tourist activity in these areas, in order to be able to identify, evaluate and internalize them in decision-making processes.

Among others, this service includes the possibility of measuring in economic terms the value of the services provided by the environment (natural spaces, landscapes, beaches, water quality, etc.), evaluate the social profitability of a project or activity, and the modeling of the recreational / tourist demand of a natural space or tourist destination.

OUR EXPERIENCE

Platja Mallorca

The research group conducted a study for business management and the environment to quantify the monetary value of the services of the beaches of Mallorca.

To do it, the group examined the influx levels in each of the 73 beaches under study and the attributes that characterize them, and estimated the recreational use value during the August. In summary, the satisfaction and well-being that tourists obtain when they enjoy the recreational services provided by the beaches were quantified monetarily.

The study has allowed to identify the attributes that positively influence the well-being of tourists, such as the beach is recognized with the blue flag symbol, is located in a natural, forestry or agricultural landscape or has wooded and vegetable cover.
