Studies of population dynamics and evolutionary demography for the management and conservation of species

Analysis of the distribution, abundance and survival of animal and plant populations through molecular data and long-time series.

The population dynamic studies the composition of a population of the same species (number of individuals, age, sex, etc.) and their variations over time. The study of demographic parameters such as survival, reproductive success, distribution or dispersion (emigration-immigration) allow us to know and identify the future of a particular species as well as detect those points where it is advisable to act to ensure maintenance of the population.

Within this line of research, we also study the interaction networks plant-animal in different types of ecosystems and the spatio-temporal changes that take place. An example is the study of pollination and seed dispersal networks in different archipelagos, specifically in the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands or the Galápagos.

This service includes:

  • Evaluation of the structure and dynamics of animals and plants threatened or endangered populations
  • Identification of the mechanisms that determine networks structure in different communities (study of the morphological and anatomical characters of plants and animals, network functionality, role of the species that form it and consequences of the possible extinction of one of these spices)
  • Disturbances impact evaluations in ecosystems (loss of habitat, introduction of exotic species, etc.).
