Advice on constructions with ecological, sustainable and efficient materials

Service aimed at technical advice on buildings using ecological, sustainable and efficient materials.

The University offers its experience in constructions with ecological and sustainable materials that give the building a better energy efficiency. The most commonly used materials are, among others: straw, CEB (Compressed Earth Block); wood, rammed earth (also known as taipa), green wall, etc.

Green walls allow special plants to grow on the facades for vertical surfaces and watering them constantly with circulating water system. The construction using straw is a building technique where straw is used as a fundamental block to replace the classic material such as concrete, brick, stone, etc.

Using ecological and sustainable materials in construction, we can obtain benefits such as energy saving, study new renewable energy sources, water saving, build higher quality buildings, improve workplace health and safety, use locally generated raw materials or use of recyclable materials, among others.

Our experience

Collaboration in the Life Reusing Posidonia project, with the aim of building and monitoring 14 public protection houses in Sant Ferran, Formentera. It is a prototype to reduce the vulnerability of human environments to climate change, as it establishes measures to reduce CO2 production by 50%. These buildings will represent the first multifamily buildings with Energy Rating A in the Balearic Islands thanks to the use of sustainable materials: Posidonia, for example, is useful for thermal insulation and soundproofing; use of recycled cotton insulation inside the walls, etc.

Among the objectives of the project, the following ones are highlighting:

  • Reduce 50% of energy consumption in its manufacture
  • Reduce 75% of energy consumption in its lifespan
  • Reduce 60% of water consumption
  • Reduce 50% of waste production. For example, the use of recycled aggregate that can be used in landfills and as a finishing of flat roofs and come from the own works.
