2009 Dynamic optimization of wireless systems

      

Currently wireless networks have become a critical part of telecommunications, extending beyond traditional environments such as offices and homes, to get to public spaces such as airports or shopping malls. The great variability of environments with high expectations in terms of reliability, low power consumption and high efficiency require mechanisms allowing optimal exploitation of the characteristics of the medium.

Description

Wireless networks have recently gained crucial importance in telecommunications, getting beyond traditional environment of offices and houses to reach public spaces like airports, shopping centers and even public outdoor WiFi zones with near neighborhood coverage. The great environment variability together with the high expectations in terms of reliability, low power consumption and high data throughput require powerful adaptive mechanisms to exploit the instantaneous operating conditions of each medium.

In response to these requirements researchers from the University of Balearic Islands have developed a simple mechanism to achieve automatic and dynamic adaptation of wireless systems to the instantaneous operating scenario. Its crucial advantage is computational burden reduction, avoiding unnecessary interference and achieving maximum throughput at the same time. It is compatible with existing standards and allows error rates reduction and energy saving at higher data transmission rate.

Innovacions

There are different mechanisms of adaptation of multicarrier systems but none exploits the frequency diversity in the propagation medium dynamically and adaptively. This procedure ensures energy savings in battery-powered devices and is compatible with existing standards.

Actual state

The functioning of this method has been prooved by a computer simulation. This procedure is applicable in the optimization of all multicarrier systems, which make up most wireless systems and is also applicable in sensor networks due to  the need for low power consumption.
