Biodegradation, bioremediation techniques and product biotransformation

Application of microorganisms to soil and water decontamination processes by microbiological removal of contaminants.

Bioremediation or biodegradation techniques are a decontamination technology based on the use of microorganisms, fungi, plants and/or enzymes that have the ability to remove contaminants and transform them into harmless or mineralize them to CO2 and H20. The advantage of these techniques is that they reduce costs and provide information to monitoring the quality of treated water and soils.

The UIB has a research group specialized in the application of bioremediation and biotransformation techniques to eliminate difficult-to-dispose organic pollutants, such as petroleum components (linear and aromatic hydrocarbons) , the elimination of ammonium in wastewater treatment, the elimination of nitrates in the water purification process and/or hygiene in the composting process.

OUR EXPERIENCE

The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Environmental Technology Park of Mallorca, TIRME, responsible for urban waste management in Mallorca, carry out research studies on composting, specifically on the evaluation of the compound sewage treatment waste in the production of ornamental plants for green roofs.
