Development of small-scale microfluid analysis methods

Environmental microfluidics allows to simulate biological environments and manipulate and analyze physical-biological interactions between microorganisms and their fluid environment at micrometric scale (one micrometer is one millionth of a meter).

Microfluidic devices are soft photolithography systems that perform complex analytics or simulate natural systems accurately. They have multiple applications in the field of the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology and chemistry among others, and have been successfully used in the field of marine microbiology for the separation of microorganisms, to conduct motility studies of microorganisms in response to different physical-chemical conditions or for the study of trophic interactions in planktonic systems.
