Intervention in childhood enuresis protocol

Enuresis causes children to become involuntarily and persistently urinate during the day and / or night when they should already have control, with no signs of pathology.

The lack of voluntary control of urination, especially at night, is a common disorder during childhood. In order for a diagnosis to be established, urine leakage should occur after the age of five that is when it is expected to have completely reached visceral control. This situation can cause self-esteem problems, feelings of shame, hygiene problems caused by wet clothes or sheets, and may even limit the child's participation in certain activities that involve sleeping outside the home.

Enuresis is not a disease but a temporary dysfunction whose intervention is possible through appropriate behavioural and physiological training. A research group from the UIB is specialized in the treatment of childhood enuresis that offers advice as well as the guidelines for parents and children (control of routines, inappropriate use of diapers, feeding and intake of liquids, reaction of adults, etc.). In addition, it is possible to rent the Pipistop® device consisting in a small sensor placed in the underwear that activates an alarm and wakes up the child with the first drops of urine. The use of Pipistop® has been effective in a high percentage of cases with treatments lasting between four and twelve weeks.
