Physico chemical characterization of biomaterials

The UIB can perform both bulk and surface characterizations of metallic and polymeric biomaterials for their use as  Medical Devices (implants, stents…), Biomaterials and Pharmaceuticals.

The UIB has a team dedicated to scientific research and development of new therapies and technologies in the field of cell therapy and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. This team has experience in conducting characterization studies with various types of biomaterials:

  • Implant surfaces (functionalized, coated, modified…)
  • Hydrogels
  • Scaffolds and porous structures
  • Micro and nanoparticles (solids or suspensions)

Both bulk and surface characterizations of metallic and polymeric biomaterials can be performed:

  • Surface chemistry and composition of biomaterials
  • Topography and morphology
  • Release profile of bioactive molecules from biomaterials
  • Stability in body fluids

using the following techniques: UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy,  FTIR microscopy (solids and surfaces), HPLC, ICP-AES,  SEM, SEM-EDX (morphology at the micro-scale, elemental composition mapping), AFM (nanotopography). Other techniques are as well available through partners: contact angle, profilometry, micro-CT, XPS, ToF-SIMS, particle size distribution, Z-potential.
